Video games have become a large part of entertainment for adults and children of all ages. Most of the people wonder if video games have a negative effect. Questions arise about obesity and aggressive behaviour. While extended periods of time playing video games may affect weight and behaviour, the most common negative effects are dry eyes and blurred vision.
We normally blink every 12 seconds. While enjoying playing your gaming systems, you are concentrating so hard on getting to the next level that you forget to blink. Those 12 seconds can even become two minutes. If playing game is your main form of entertainment and you practice it almost every day, overtime your eyes will dry out and dehydrate. The most common symptoms are itchy or burning sensation, watery eyes, headaches and even blurred vision
Dry eye does not usually cause any serious problems. However, there are some complications that might arise if the symptoms are ignored. For example:
· If the eyes do not have adequate tears to protect the surface from dust and foreign bodies, there is an increased risk of eye infection.
· Left untreated, dry eye can lead to eye inflammation. This can scar the surface of the corneas, which in turn can lead to chronic vision issues.
· Dry eyes will most likely cause irritation making difficult to perform activities like driving, playing games, reading, studying or working.
You do not have to stop your hobbies, you just have to be more cautious.
Try to take regular mini breaks. Every 20 minutes look away from the screen for 20 seconds.
Drink lots of fluids. Soda and sugary drinks do not count. You need to drink water to keep your body hydrated so it can produce enough tears.
Use eye drops. Gamers who feel dry eye can use approved artificial tears to help moisten eyes. Regular usage of night-time gels and artificial tears you can keep your eyes moist and prevent from getting any drier.
